ICDS seeks a talented and goal-oriented individual to join our engineering team as an HPC Implementation Engineer.

Penn State is a research powerhouse, and the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences supports a broad swath of this research—from studying the origins of far-away galaxies to developing materials for next-generation energy production, and from looking at ways to overcome misinformation and societal discord, to understanding how communities worldwide can adapt to a changing climate. ICDS works with researchers from more than 70 academic departments from nearly all of Penn State’s academic colleges and campuses, facilitating new collaborations, funding new areas of research, collaborating to overcome computational and data science challenges, building a diverse community of scholars, and providing a robust supercomputer for the Penn State community, called Roar. ICDS seeks to equip researchers with the most cutting-edge computing tools and resources to further their science, and as a part of ICDS, you will be contributing to this goal.

This is an entry level position. ICDS is seeking motivated individuals with a desire to learn and explore what High Performance Computing (HPC) has to offer.

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Implement new infrastructure to support research, including developing testing, monitoring, maintenance, and update plans to ensure proper operation and performance of ICDS systems.
  • Work with members of the operations, engineering, and development teams as we update processes and workflows in support of our dev-ops processes.
  • Work with users and other ICDS staff to understand limitations and develop engineered solutions to overcome those system limitations.
  • Debug complex problems involved with limitations of scaling applications and workflows in a high-performance computing and storage environment.

This position will be filled at a level 1

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline

The successful candidate will:

  • demonstrate that they are proactive and will be able to contribute as a member of the implementation team to develop plans, project schedules, requirements, and documentation for system enhancements and resolve technical issues as they arise
  • have the ability to communicate clearly
  • work as a member of the implementation team in a collaborative environment and actively contribute to the completion of team goals and assigned tasks
  • collaborate with team members, scientific users, and vendors to implement new solutions to improve the research capabilities of ICDS
  • assist in developing engineering methods to test and verify proper functionality and develop specific documentation for ICDS systems we implement
  • Ability to learn quickly and acquire new technical understanding of HPC practices and tools.

Desired qualifications include: 

  • Work in a Linux environment, including command-line tools, editing files, etc.
  • Write scripts using Bash and at least one other common scripting language such as Python, Perl, Ruby, etc.

Preferred experience: 

  • Additional programming languages and skills (C/C++, FORTRAN, CUDA, MPI, OpenMP, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Git or other version control and code collaboration tools.
  • High-Performance Computing (HPC) interest with the capability and passion to learn about HPC components: Storage systems, cluster computing, networking, etc.
  • Familiarity with dev-ops methods and tools
  • Familiarity with virtual environments (i.e., VMWare, RHEV, OpenStack, etc.)
  • Familiarity with RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
  • Familiarity with Configuration Management and Orchestration tools (i.e., Puppet, Ansible, etc.)
  • Familiarity with using and configuring environments on the public cloud

Specific duties of this position require US citizenship.

Candidates must also have impeccable ethics and integrity with a strong work ethic as well as strong interpersonal and written skills and the ability to work well in a team environment.
