Staff Spotlight: Derick Haigh
Posted on November 19, 2024After graduating from Penn State University with a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, Derick Haigh, R&D engineer, started working at the Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) in 2017.
Throughout high school, Haigh was interested in music and computers, leading him down his current career path to ICDS.
Haigh originally started as an operation engineer and was tasked with keeping the ICDS high-performance computing cluster healthy and running. He would work with his team to engineer the system as well as troubleshooting and resolving issues.
“Over the years, I have learned the general systems and as I became familiar with them, I took on more responsibility like automating and helping design different aspects of our cluster,” Haigh said. “The last two years, I have focused on automating the service level agreement (SLA) processes. My main goal was getting the SLA to actual, useable resources on our cluster.”
Haigh’s work streamlined this process, allowing principal investigators to gain access to ICDS resources for their research.
“I worked a lot with the team to get an understanding of our customer relationship management (CRM) system and processes, as well as how to automate that workflow,” Haigh said. “The work on SLAs and the cluster requires a lot of coordination and communication with other teams. I hope that my work, besides helping maintain a healthy and reliable system, can increase the efficiency and usage of our internal processes to make us a more adaptable team. I look forward to opportunities to tackle new problems and improve my own skillsets.”
Outside of work, Haigh spends a lot of time with his three orange cats and golden retriever. In his free time, he enjoys playing the bass guitar. Haigh also really enjoys the local Asian food scene, one of his favorite places being Green Bowl.
