Funding Outside the Box: Non-Federal Paths for Junior Researchers

The Penn State Center for Immersive Experiences is hosting a webinar, “Funding Outside the Box: Non-Federal Paths for Junior Researchers,” which is geared towards Penn State faculty and research staff in the early parts of their careers.
The webinar will take place Wednesday, April 23, from 9 to 10 a.m. The Zoom link will be provided after registration.
The event will bring together various leaders in science, engineering, and medicine with years of experience and industry engagement. Attendees will be able to gather advice and learn strategies for soliciting non-federal funding to bolster their research efforts.
“I am excited to host this webinar, in collaboration with members of the National Academies of Sciences’ New Voices Program (2024-2026 cohort), in hopes that it provides junior researchers with advice to keep their research efforts moving forward,” said Jessica Menold, Penn State Center for Immersive Experiences director, Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences co-hire, and associate professor of mechanical engineering and of industrial and manufacturing engineering.

Dr. Ayodeji Coker, director at Booz Allen Hamilton where he provides AI and autonomy subject matter expertise, thought leadership, and strategic vision to the GDS NMC Account. Dr. Kiana Aran, professor of bioengineering and medicine at University of California, San Diego, and director of the Center for Technologies for Healthy Aging, is a trailblazer in bioelectronics and precision medicine. She has founded multiple successful biotech startups, driving innovation with significant real-world impact.

Dr. Tim Simpson, leading expert in engineering design, and professor emeritus in the Penn State College of Engineering, uses 3D printing and additive manufacturing, product family and platform design, and multidisciplinary design optimization. During his career at Penn State, he received over $65M in support from various organizations like the U.S. National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy.

Dr. George R. Thompson, III, professor of medicine at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine with a joint appointment in the departments of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, and Internal Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases. His research interests are fungal diagnostics, clinical trials, novel antifungal agents, and host immunogenetics.
