Resource Request for Junior Researchers (Systems Engineering) support for cluster account lifecycle management (Faculty/Junior Researcher Collaboration Opportunity)

Resource Request for Junior Researchers (Systems Engineering) support for cluster account lifecycle management

PI: Ross Mickens (ICDS)

Apply as Junior Researcher

Plan for funding tuition for graduate students, or the remainder of the researcher’s salary for postdoc and research faculty: No

Purpose:

Assist ICDS technical staff with developing a systems approach to account lifecycle management that does more than meet the needs of researchers. Many ICDS HPC cluster users progress through their academic careers using our resources. ICDS needs to implement an account audit process that can track account utilization and implement resource reclamation processes.

Background:

The ICDS account creation and billing systems have automated components to enable rapid user deployment. Currently, there is no automation or well-documented method for auditing these accounts or determining orphaned resources.

ICDS needs to understand better our user account lifecycle to manage system resources and plan for future investment.

People Resource Request:

  • Develop metrics to measure client usage based on functional and technical requirements
  • Develop workflow and tools to gather relevant metrics data from SQL databases, system configurations, and financial team resources.
  • Aid in the development of workflow and tools to build usage profiles
  • Coordinate with the ICDS Technical Team and LRN services to deploy user training resources.

Expected Outcomes:

  • A design plan for system account auditing
  • Demonstration of the account certification process
  • A metrics-based model for usage profiles

Timeline:

  • Initial design and proposal: 4 months
  • Proof Of Concept implementation: 5-6 months
