MPI (Message Passing Interface) Programming Workshop
Date: Tuesday, August 12 — Wednesday, August 13
Time: 11:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Location: 103 Career Services Building
Join us for a focused and practical workshop on MPI programming, designed for students and researchers who want to unlock the power of high-performance computing (HPC). As research problems grow in scale and complexity, so too must our computational tools. MPI remains the gold standard for building scalable, distributed applications.
This workshop will equip participants with a working knowledge of MPI and its role in parallel computing, enabling them to write programs that efficiently utilize multiple processors across modern HPC systems. Through hands-on exercises and real-world examples, attendees will learn how to structure and optimize their code for speed, scalability, and performance. Whether you’re analyzing large datasets, modeling complex systems, or simulating physical processes, MPI can help you move beyond the limits of your laptop or single-node workflows. By attending, you’ll gain not only technical skills but also insight into how scalable computing can transform your research capabilities.
No prior experience with parallel programming is required, only a solid understanding of programming fundamentals and a desire to scale up. Some C or Fortran programming experience, while not required, will be helpful for the hands-on examples.
Registration: Interested applicants must first have an ACCESS ID. Note this ACCESS ID refers to NSF-funded ACCESS (Advanced Cyberinfrastructure Coordination Ecosystem: Services & Support) program, and it is separate from your Penn State access account. If you do not have an ACCESS ID, please visit the ACCESS User Registration page to create one. Once you have an ACCESS ID, please register no later than noon Eastern time on Monday, August 11.
This two-day MPI workshop hosted by ICDS is part of the HPC monthly workshop series provided by Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC). This event will be presented using the Wide Area Classroom (WAC) training platform. This will be an IN PERSON event hosted by various satellite sites, there WILL NOT be a direct to desktop option for this event.
