Gretta Kellogg – Research Computing Facilitator

Gretta works with the RISE team to connect Penn State faculty with integrated research computing, including open cloud and off-premise solutions in addition to ICDS-ACI. Gretta has worked as a program manager for a genomics center, and as an IT project manager supporting various large scale implementations for research and enterprise-scale computing initiatives.

Diego Menéndez – Parallelization

Diego holds a master’s degree in Software Engineering and specializes in refactoring research codes using parallelism as the driver for performance. He has delivered maintainable software for projects in different disciplines including the LIGO Scientific Collaboration. In his role of Campus Champion for Penn State, he facilitates access to XSEDE resources across the nation.

Jeff Nucciarone – Parallelization

Jeff holds a master’s degree in Meteorology from Penn State University. He has extensive experience in high-performance computing and previously supported the business, chemistry, chemical engineering, geosciences, materials science, and meteorology communities. His experience covers the parallelization and optimization of codes. Along with Diego Menéndez in the role of Campus Champion for Penn State, he facilitates access to XSEDE resources across the nation.

Chuck Pavloski – Computational Earth Sciences / RISE Team Lead

Chuck holds a Ph.D. in Meteorology from Penn State University. He has extensive operational scientific field experience and is the former computing director for Penn State meteorology where he architected seven HPC clusters spanning a variety of computationally intense scientific problems. His experience includes the optimization of earth system, meteorological, climate, geophysical modeling and the analysis of ground and satellite based remote sensing. He also has a wide variety of experience designing solutions for scientific workflows spanning a variety of other computationally intensive disciplines.

Justin Petucci – Computational Physics

Justin holds a master’s degree in Physics (currently a PhD candidate). His area of expertise is in computational solid state and surface physics where he utilizes atomistic simulation methods such as Molecular Dynamics (MD), Molecular Statics (MS), Equilibrium and Kinetic Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MC, MCMC, GCMC, KMC), and Density Functional Theory (DFT) to probe material properties and processes.

Danying Shao – Computational Biology

Danying holds a Ph.D. in Biophysics from the University of California, San Diego, and a B.S. in Physics from Peking University. She specializes in computational biology, data science, and web applications. She has worked on a wide range of projects, including cell signaling, cell motility, next-generation sequencing pipelines, labor management, and institutional research.

Greg Von Kuster – Science Gateways for Big Data Research

Greg has been working in computational research for 30 years. He is a founding developer of the Galaxy science gateway project and the Galaxy Tool Shed, the world’s first biomedical app store. An expert in building science gateway environments, Greg has worked on projects in a range of fields, including entomology, plant genomics, epigenetics, ChIP-exo analysis, and coral research.
