The Financial Management Association Applied Finance Conference, hosted at St. John’s University in New York City, saw Nonna Sorokina, Penn State Center for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to Industry (AIMI) fellow, who coordinated and participated in a panel on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the financial industry.

“Forefronts of AI/ML Research in Finance — Where Academia meets Practice,” also featured Xun Zhong, assistant professor at Fordham University; Brian Clark, associate professor of finance at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; and Balbinder Singh, assistant professor at the Stevens Institute of Technology at Temple University.

This year’s panel featured an overview of research on using AI in the financial industry, as well as some research results and highlighted centers that help faculty develop applied research, such as AIMI and the Center for Research Toward Advancing Financial Technologies at the Stevens Institute of Technology.

Applications of AI and machine learning methods in finance have been growing exponentially, Sorokina said, adding that there’s an interest in learning more about recent developments in industry and academia.

“Audience members learned how they can start incorporating AI and machine learning in their research plans and the state of the discipline on these systems,” Sorokina said. “We had many meaningful conversations, and we hope for productive collaborations resulting from this event.”

Sorokina and other AIMI leadership members have been involved with the FMA conference by coordinating events and collaborations.

The conference provides opportunities for researchers and industry experts to present their work in the form of presentations or panel discussions while informing audiences of new practices, advancements, challenges and hypotheses in finance and accounting, according to the website.

“The aim of the conference is to bring together academia and industry professionals and I have been involved with FMA since 2017 discussing papers, assembling panels and facilitating sponsorship of the conference through AIMI,” Sorokina said. “Last year, we presented a panel on industry and academia collaborations with Gretta Kellogg, AIMI assistant director and Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) assistant director and director of strategic initiatives.”
