UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) aims to provide Penn State University faculty with the opportunity to learn new skills and make use of available resources in artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum sciences, through the Faculty Upskilling Fellowships program.

The program will provide tenure-track and tenured faculty the time to focus on professional development in AI and quantum by learning about software and hardware, mastering specific algorithms or models, and exploring applications of these disciplines to their current research program.

Faculty in any discipline may apply. The deadline is 5 p.m. EDT on Monday, July 28. Faculty should apply via InfoReady.

In their proposals, faculty should lay out a learning plan that is designed to enable their research groups or labs to harness AI or quantum sciences and become more competitive for future external funding calls.

Selected faculty can request a one-course teaching buyout that will provide the time needed for skill development within the program. This buyout can be used during spring or fall 2026, or fall 2027, contingent upon support from their unit leadership.

Faculty can also request funds for conferences, workshops or training that would contribute to their goals and learning plan. Faculty can also request compute credits on ICDS’ Roar Collab cluster, funds for accessing commercial AI tools, or consulting time with ICDS’ Research Innovations with Scientists and Engineers (RISE) team of experts.
